This is a painting of contradictions. The artist has portrayed a seated begger with his arms crossed in front of him. His right hand holds a cane while his left hand holds a tattered hat. But if you look closely these are not the hands of someone who is used to doing manual labor. Although weather beaten, the face portrays strength. The hair, somewhat mused, is clean and his beard is trimmed. The eyes are neither covered or down cast. There is a sense of purpose about this person. Actually there is more to it than that, this person is a person and wants the viewer to know that what ever the situation is that he finds himself in at the present he is still someone. Even though his clothes are torn and tattered and the artist has him seated in front of a wall that appears to be flaking and in disrepair, this is not a begger that the viewer will soon forget. Could this be a self-portrait of the artist or a man of means down on his luck?
