USD Arrogant and stylish our young cavalier is the epitome of a Restoration cavalier. This young man would not be out of place as the subject of a poem by Byron, Keats, or Shelly. From the perfectly curled and powdered wig that falls below his shoulders framing his face and highlighting the casual but highly staged ruffled, opened shirt collar. Our hero is a "Gentleman" and the artist has staged-managed this portrait to even the placing of the hands, rendered with such finesse as to be feminine instead of masculine. The draping of the brilliant blue cloak, with the white satin or silk lining contrasts with the somber red curtain behind the sitter. Graceful and stylish the sitter lounges in a chair with a Greek column behind and to the right of him. The pose, the setting, the attitude of the sitter all enhance the classical but relaxed mood of this painting.
